January was a hopeless space

an acre, a crater, I couldn’t dare face

devoid of colour, consumed by clouds

I wish I had known then what I know now

February, a 30 second crimson climax

A promise burnt into eternal flashbacks

But I marched on through Spring’s yellow hum

and am ever so grateful

not to be haunted by the blues of last April.

Tending to my pixelated farm

May was duck egg, softening the alarm

which brings us to June, pink and bright

beach days and birthdays filled with delight

Golden memories forged in the heat of July

friendship bracelets, boba, the whole wide sky

August’s grey throes, turned silver by my mother

generosity is friends who are not fair-weather

September’s obligatory birthday cry

Rusting the once shining cogs of my mind

but no month is ever without its joy

proved by October’s pastel boy meets boy

November muffles illness in its gingerbread glow

prepare for the season of giving, smile at the snow

The fairy lights of December are a familiar blur

so it’s farewell 2024, what a year you were.
